An oil portrait of Modi painted by Shen Shu, secretary general of the Zhejiang Kaiming Art Gallery (SUDESHNA SARKAR) During his official visits to China, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has often been photographed in different ways. But the G20 Summit could see him being presented in the most outstanding way ever. The foundation for this image was established in 2007 when the Zhejiang Kaiming Art Gallery, a public institution established by the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Zhejiang Provincial Department of Civil Affairs, sent a 40-member delegation of artists to India. When the trip was over, the members spent a year creating artworks on what they saw and thought of India. When preparations started for the G20 Summit, the gallery had a proposal--presenting an oil portrait of Modi to him on the sidelines of the event. It was painted by Shen Shu, secretary general of the gallery. It took Shen nearly four months to do the portrait and as the image shows, it's possibly one of the best portraits of the Indian prime minister ever. When he attended an informal discussion among BRICS member state leaders on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Hangzhou, Modi said people-to-people and cultural links between India and China have been strengthened. And the image bears that out. (Reporting from Hangzhou) Comments to yanwei@bjreview.com |
