Seventy Years on the Silver Screen
Editorial  ·  2019-10-28  ·   Source: NO.44 OCTOBER 31, 2019

A number of patriotic films, which were released around the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1, have been successful at the box office as well as in audience ratings.

Over the past seven decades, films have played an important role in recording the times, with realism the dominant format of Chinese films.

They have focused on representing reality and reflecting people's lives and thoughts. A number of excellent realistic films have emerged during different eras. Chinese films have spread values such as kindness, honesty and positivity, inspiring generations of Chinese people.

Films from different eras have distinct characteristics in cinematography, artistic style and technology. In addition, the Chinese film industry has given rise to seven generations of directors based on directorial concepts. Directors from each generation have expressed their views on history, society and life through their films and have created films of diverse genres and aesthetic styles.

Through the films produced over the past 70 years, one can see the progress of the country and its people, and the evolving times.

The Chinese film market has also become increasingly open and inclusive. Some avant-garde films have been recognized and many international blockbusters have been popular in China and have scored high in box office takings.

As the second largest film market and the largest film production country in the world, China has over 60,000 silver screens nationwide, with box office revenue of 60.9 billion yuan ($8.6 billion) last year.

However, although the Chinese film market has great consumption capacity, it still has room for development. The industry is still not strong enough even though the gap with developed countries is narrowing. In order to transform China from a big film producer to a strong film producer, Chinese filmmakers still need to make strenuous efforts for the sustainable development of the industry.

The huge domestic market, the thriving Chinese economy and the openness and diversity of Chinese people's thinking are all the driving forces and foundations for a strong film industry.
