Despite the cold weather, Mao Mingwu, Vice Chairperson of the Labor Union of Wuhan Metro Group, still works outdoors in a local community in Wuhan, the epicenter of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic, in central China’s Hubei Province, on February 15. Together with nine other colleagues, Mao, who is in his 50s, has been checking residents’ passes, communicating with them, delivering food and medicine and taking their temperature. To win the battle against the epidemic, all residential communities in Wuhan have been placed on lockdown since February 11. Starting from February 17, the city has carried out a three-day operation of door-to-door checks across all communities to identify infected people, suspected cases, fever patients and those who have had close contact with the infected. To support prevention and control in local communities, members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) organizations at all levels in Hubei have stepped forward to fight on the front lines, working in local communities to conduct checks and ensure 24-hour closure of the communities. Staff from municipal and provincial bureaus and CPC members in Wuhan have volunteered to guard entrances of local communities, deliver food and medicine and check residents door to door. According to Mao, more than 800 staff of Wuhan Metro Group have started working in 49 communities in the city together with the community staff and volunteers since February 8. As of February 20, more than 30,000 government workers and employees from state-owned enterprises have worked in streets and communities in Wuhan, making joint efforts to curb the spread of the epidemic.
