On January 8, 1976, then Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai passed away in Beijing at the age of 78. Forty-five years later, Chinese people still cherish the memory of the late leader and show respect to him for his dedication to the country and its people.
Premier Zhou has a deep connection with Beijing Review. In April 1954, on the way back home after leading a delegation to the Geneva Conference, Premier Zhou talked several times about the importance of mutual understanding between China and foreign countries. He said that China needed to publish a weekly magazine in English to introduce its domestic and foreign policies as well as social and economic development to foreign countries. In March 1958, the English news magazine with a mission of “Presenting China to the World” was launched. Premier Zhou personally named it as Beijing Review.
