China hosted the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 from August 31 to September 15, the first time it was held in an Asian country. A record number of 32 teams played the matches across eight cities—Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan and Dongguan. An important feature of the tournament was that it sent seven winning teams directly to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. On September 8, China lost to Nigeria 73-86, failing to automatically qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.
