A national laboratory in the east China coastal city of Qingdao reached an agreement with an Australian organization to jointly build a research center on southern hemisphere oceans.

The center will promote the sharing of marine knowledge and experience, scientific vessels and facilities, and marine research and educational resources between the two countries as well as forge a partnership in marine observation, said Wu Lixin, director of Qingdao National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology (QNLM).

Larry Marshall, Chief Executive of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), welcomed the collaboration and said southern hemisphere ocean research is conducive to combating global warming.

The center will provide support for China to participate in the global ocean observation system, especially in the southern hemisphere, according to Wu.

The QNLM was established in October 2015. It aims to be a world-class comprehensive research center for marine science and technology as well as an open platform for collaborative innovation while bringing in resources and professionals to improve China's innovation abilities in the field.
