History of BRICS |
2001 The term “BRIC” was coined in 2001 by Jim O’Neill of Goldman Sachs in his publication Building Better Global Economic BRICs. The term is the acronym for Brazil, Russia, India and China. June 2009 The first BRIC Summit was held in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Following the summit, BRIC leaders issued a joint statement in which they set forth “the goals to promote dialogue and cooperation among our countries in an incremental, proactive, pragmatic, open and transparent way.” September 2006 The foreign ministers of the initial four BRIC states (Brazil, Russia, India and China) met in New York City, the U.S., on the sidelines of the General Debate of the UN Assembly, beginning a series of high-level meetings. April 2010 The 2010 BRIC Summit Place: Brasília, Brazil A joint statement listed the concrete steps to move forward with BRIC cooperation and coordination. December 2010 South Africa officially joined the group. The group was subsequently renamed BRICS—adding “S” for South Africa—to reflect its expanded membership.
March 2012 The 4th BRICS Summit Place: New Delhi, India Theme: BRICS Partnership for Global Stability, Security and Prosperity Agenda: Global governance and sustainable development The summit was followed by the adoption of the Delhi Declaration documenting the progress of BRICS cooperation and supporting the BRICS’ critical role in the world economy of the post-financial crisis era.
March 2013 The 5th BRICS Summit Place: Durban, South Africa Theme: BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Development, Integration and Industrialization Following the summit, the group’s leaders adopted the Durban Declaration and Action Plan, decided to establish the BRICS New Development Bank and Contingency Reserve Arrangement, and announced the founding of the BRICS Business and BRICS Think Tank councils.
July 2014 The 6th BRICS Summit Place: Fortaleza, Brazil Theme: Inclusive Growth: Sustainable Solutions Agenda: Political coordination, sustainable development and inclusive growth The summit was followed by the adoption of the Fortaleza Declaration and the signing of both the agreement on the establishment of the New Development Bank as well as the Treaty for the Establishment of a BRICS Contingency Reserve Arrangement.
July 2015 The 7th BRICS Summit Place: Ufa, Russia Theme: BRICS Partnership– a Powerful Factor of Global Development Agenda: International political and economic issues plus BRICS cooperation The summit was followed by the adoption of the 2015 Ufa Declaration and 2015 Ufa Action Plan, as well as the signing of the BRICS Inter-Governmental Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Culture, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Cooperation between the BRICS Banking Mechanism and the New Development Bank, and the MOU on the Establishment of a BRICS Joint Website.
October 2016 The 8th BRICS Summit Place: Goa, India Theme: Building Responsive, Inclusive, and Collective Solutions Agenda: The international political and economic situation, global governance and BRICS cooperation The summit was followed by the adoption of the Goa Declaration and Plan of Action as well as the signing of the MOU on the Establishment of the BRICS Agricultural Research Platform and the MOU on Cooperation between the BRICS Diplomatic Academies.
September 2017 The 9th BRICS Summit Place: Xiamen, China Theme: BRICS: Stronger Partnership for a Brighter Future Agenda: International political and economic situation, global governance, sustainable development and BRICS cooperation The summit further witnessed the Dialogue of Emerging Market and Developing Countries and was followed by the adoption of the BRICS Leaders Xiamen Declaration and Action Plan.
July 2018 The 10th BRICS Summit Place: Johannesburg, South Africa Theme: BRICS in Africa: Collaboration for Inclusive Growth and Shared Prosperity during the Fourth Industrial Revolution Agenda: BRICS strategic cooperation, opportunities and challenges in addressing the Fourth Industrial Revolution The summit was followed by the adoption of the 10th BRICS Summit Johannesburg Declaration and Plan of Action.
November 2019 The 11th BRICS Summit Place: Brasilia, Brazil Theme: BRICS: Economic Growth for an Innovative Future Agenda: The international and regional situation, BRICS cooperation, and global economic governance During the summit, BRICS leaders jointly attended the closing ceremony of the Business Forum and held closed-door meetings, open meetings and dialogue sessions with the Business Council and the New Development Bank. The summit was followed by the adoption of the Brasilia Declaration.
November 2020 The 12th BRICS Summit Via video link Theme: BRICS Partnership for Global Stability, Shared Security, and Innovative Growth Agenda: BRICS cooperation in combating COVID-19, international and regional situations, and global economic governance During the summit, the BRICS leaders also listened to work reports from leaders of the New Development Bank and other cooperation mechanisms. The summit was followed by the adoption of the Moscow Declaration.
September 2021 The 13th BRICS Summit Via video link Theme: BRICS@15: Intra- BRICS Cooperation for Continuity, Consolidation, and Consensus Agenda: Further cooperation in combating COVID-19, promoting pragmatic cooperation and addressing global and regional hotspot issues. The summit was followed by the adoption of the New Delhi Declaration, which summarized the achievements of BRICS cooperation in several fields and expressed a common BRICS voice on strengthening cooperation in terms of public health and vaccines, promoting world economic recovery, implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and safeguarding world equity and justice. |
