When I arrived in Hefei, I was filled with the same kind of curiosity that has been a lifelong companion. Born in Brazil, with a mother who carries the rich traditions of Luxembourg and Germany, and a father rooted in the cultures of Treviso, Italy and Porto, Portugal, I've always felt like a citizen of the world. This diverse background has shaped my worldview, instilling in me a deep respect for different cultures and an insatiable desire to explore the world around me.
Moving to Hefei has been an adventure filled with new smells, tastes, and stories—each day is a discovery. It's a city that blends the old with the new, where ancient traditions meet modern innovations. I find myself wandering through its bustling streets, marveling at the harmony between the past and the future, much like the harmony I've tried to cultivate within myself.
Since I was a young boy, China has always held a special place in my imagination. My father, a Venetian, would tell me stories of Marco Polo before I went to bed—tales of his incredible adventures through Asia, especially China. These stories sparked a fascination within me, a desire to learn more about this land of ancient history and mysteries. With over 5,000 years of culture and tradition, China is a country that has always beckoned me with its depth and richness.
Why did I choose Hefei? Perhaps it's because, as a storyteller, I was drawn to a place where history is alive in every corner. Or maybe it's the warmth of the people, whose kindness reminds me of the close-knit communities my parents spoke of from their homelands. In Hefei, I've found a sense of belonging, a feeling that I am part of something larger—a global tapestry of cultures and experiences.
From the moment I arrived in China, I was struck by the warmth and friendliness of the people. Whether in the streets or the malls, there is a genuine sense of welcome that touches my soul. People here are always smiling, eager to make sure I don't need any help. It's not uncommon for children to approach me, their faces beaming with excitement, just to say hello or try to strike up a conversation in English. This simple, sincere hospitality is something I've never experienced before, and it makes me feel incredibly connected to this place.
Now, as a teacher at an international school in Hefei, I have the privilege of sharing my love for learning with students from 33 different countries. It's a magical feeling, being in China as both a teacher and a lifelong student. Every day, I am learning from the amazing people around me—whether it's from the wisdom of ancient traditions or the fresh perspectives of the young minds I teach. The Chinese people, with their eagerness to learn and their deep respect for knowledge, inspire me daily.
Living here has allowed me to embrace my identity as a global citizen fully. I feel connected to the world, not just through my heritage, but through the shared human experiences that transcend borders. Every interaction, every conversation, is an opportunity to learn and grow, to add another chapter to the story of my life.
As I continue to settle into my new life in Hefei, I do so with enthusiasm and a deep sense of respect for Chinese culture and traditions. It's a privilege to live in a place where every day brings new insights and experiences to my life!
