Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) could become a platform telling Chinese stories, Wan Nang-hon, a deputy to the 14th National People's Congress (NPC), the country's top legislature, told Beijing Review.

"As a platform for economic and trade cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, Macao also hold an advantage in international communication," Wan, also Deputy Director and General Manager of the Macao Daily News, said. For example, Macao could invite media outlets from Portuguese-speaking countries to come visit both the SAR and other parts of China to learn about the One Country, Two Systems arrangement and implementation in Macao specifically and see and hear firsthand Chinese stories.

Macao, a Chinese territory, came under Portuguese rule following Portugal's occupation that began in the mid-16th century. The Chinese Government resumed its exercise of sovereignty over the area in 1999.

As a deputy from the media sector, Wan has submitted a suggestion on improving Chinese storytelling to the ongoing NPC.

Countries usually differ in their politics, economy, culture and other aspects, and their communication contexts, too, vary. "Therefore, when telling Chinese stories, you need to consider local settings and adjust them to the local mindset and language," Wan said.

Wan also hailed the role of Macao's media in promoting mutual understanding between the SAR and the mainland. According to him, in the past years, Macao Daily News has constantly sent its reporters to the mainland. The news agency also organizes Macao youth visits to the mainland to enhance their understanding of it.

"These efforts have helped create a good atmosphere of loving the motherland and loving Macao in local society," Wan said.

As the country enters a new development stage, Wan expects collaboration between Macao and mainland media outlets, especially those in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Guangdong-Macao in-depth cooperation zone in Hengqin, adjacent to Macao, will rise to the next level.

The NPC, China's supreme state authority, is composed of deputies elected from the country's provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities, SARs and armed forces. During their annual gathering, from March 5 to 13 this year, these deputies submit suggestions to the NPC, which are then forwarded to government agencies. Related agencies are obligated to consider these suggestions and provide feedback.
