China expresses deep concerns over escalating Yemen, Red Sea situation

China is deeply concerned about the casualties of innocent civilians and the damage to energy facilities and other civilian infrastructure amid recent escalation in Yemen and the Red Sea, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on September 14.

Attacks against civilian infrastructure that bears on people's livelihoods are unacceptable, Guo said at a regular press briefing, adding that increasing turmoil in the region serves no one's interest, and the sovereignty and security of all countries should be respected.

It is reported that Yemen's Houthis recently attacked four cities in southern Saudi Arabia, injuring more than 70 civilians and damaging multiple energy facilities and other civilian infrastructure. The Houthis said that they had also come under attack and suffered casualties.

China calls on the relevant parties to exercise restraint, ease tensions through communication and dialogue, and work toward deescalation as soon as possible, Guo said.

"The only viable way forward is to resolve disputes through political and diplomatic means," the spokesperson said.
