The Red Detachment of Women, a Chinese revolutionary classic from the 1960s, was performed by the National Ballet of China in Haikou, capital of China's southernmost province of Hainan, on March 2. The performance was held to celebrate the ballet's 60th anniversary.

In its story, which unfolds on Hainan Island in the 1930s, a young woman named Wu Qionghua escapes from slavery and imprisonment by the tyrannical landlord Nan Batian and joins the Red Detachment of Women, part of the Chinese Red Army.

The innovative show, which combines Western classical ballet and traditional Chinese culture with revolutionary themes, has enjoyed popularity since its premiere.
