Located in the Altai Mountains, on China’s border with Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia, Kanas Lake is one of the country’s most pristine and enchanting alpine ecosystems. Legend has it the lakebed is the famed secret resting place of Genghis Khan’s remains. Surrounded by glaciers, snowy peaks and taiga forest, the lake has supported generations of Tuvan people, one of the oldest nomadic groups in north China, who now open their villages to visitors.
