Luliang, a county in Yunnan Province, southwest China, is blessed with naturally colored sand. Making the most of this resource, the county has made sand painting a signature local art. Its annual Sand Painting Festival, jointly hosted with Beijing Sand Painting Association, has become a big drawing card for art lovers and tourists. At the festival, artists use sand to create pictures on a light box in front of them, with the image of their works projected onto a large screen for spectators to view.
