The exhibition Ingenious Craftsmanship—Stone Carvings of Quyang offers a comprehensive look at the heritage, craftsmanship and artistic innovation of stone carvings from Quyang, Hebei Province in north China.
It is the first large-scale showcase of Quyang stone carvings at the National Museum of China in Beijing. More than 40 masterpieces of historic interest are featured, alongside 91 contemporary works by Quyang artisans. Quyang, a county renowned for its stone carving art, has a long history in this craft.
The people of Quyang have created stone carvings since the Western Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 25). During the Northern Dynasties (439-581) period, Quyang became a major Buddhist statue carving center in north China.
