Every summer in Beijing, Daxing watermelons are the top choice to beat the heat. Daxing District, in the city's south, with its mineral-rich sandy soil, produces watermelons that are extra juicy and sweet, making them a famous local specialty. Each May and June, Daxing celebrates the Watermelon Festival, highlighting the joy of harvest. The most exciting event of the festival is the watermelon judging. This year, 1,446 watermelons from all over China competed, with an 88.95-kg one winning the King of Watermelons title.
