On May 9 and 10, the Shanghai International Dance Center hosted the world premiere of Heartbeat of Muqam, an original ballet by the Shanghai Ballet. The production, which took three years to craft, exemplifies how the Shanghai-style ballet supports the creative transformation and innovative development of China's rich traditional culture. Muqam, recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage, is a traditional Uygur performing art blending singing, music and dance.
The ballet uses the journey of a young musician named Guli, returning to her roots, as a narrative thread, unraveling a poignant story of cultural exploration.
The Shanghai Ballet's creative team made six extensive field trips to Xinjiang. They immersed themselves in local customs and culture, drawing inspiration from the performances of veteran artists and the vibrant scenes of local villagers.
