Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed the opening ceremony of the fifth annual meeting of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) via video link on July 28. Xi pinned high hopes on the AIIB and called for efforts to make the AIIB a new type of multilateral development bank that promotes development across the world, a new type of development platform progressing with the times, a new type of high-performance institution for international cooperation and a new paradigm of multilateral cooperation. Countries need to pursue an open policy, explicitly oppose protectionism and unilateralism, and strive to raise the level of opening up at both bilateral and multilateral level, so that we can connect our economies and build an open world economy.

During the fight against COVID-19, the first public health emergency the AIIB has met since its establishment, it is found that countries with poor infrastructure also face difficulties in responding to such crises. Therefore, the AIIB will increase infrastructure investment in public health, medical treatment and communication technology to help members cope with and recover from the losses brought by the pandemic.
