December 20 celebrates the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland. Since its return in 1999, Macao has been governed as a special administrative region (SAR) under the “one country, two systems” policy — a unique arrangement that allows it to maintain its capitalist system and ways of life within socialist China. Chinese President Xi Jinping said Macao SAR will create an even brighter future by fully leveraging the institutional advantages of “one country, two systems,” working hard and actively promoting innovation. Xi is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission.
