On March 23, 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping put forward the concept of building a community with a shared future for humanity in his speech at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in Russia. Over the past 10 years, the concept has been put into practice around the globe and written into several major UN documents.

In working toward this goal, China is committed to adhering to its opening-up policy and sharing opportunities with other countries. In 2013, it proposed the Belt and Road Initiative, which aims to promote connectivity worldwide. To date, over three quarters of the world's countries have joined this initiative. In November 2018, it inaugurated the China International Import Expo, which attracted participants from 172 countries, regions and international organizations in its first year. The expo has since been held every year as scheduled, despite the pandemic.

As part of the global battle against COVID-19, China has sent medical teams, provided large quantities of badly needed supplies and offered billions of vaccine doses to other countries in need. When it comes to addressing climate change, the country has taken measures toward achieving the goals of carbon peaking and neutrality. China has also eradicated absolute poverty, contributing more than 70 percent of the global reduction in absolute poverty over the past 40 years.

China is committed to upholding the UN-centered international system, the international order underpinned by international law, and the basic norms governing international relations built on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. It is the second largest contributor to the UN regular budget and the largest contributor of peacekeepers among the permanent members of the UN Security Council.

All these actions demonstrate the way forward for building a community with a shared future for humanity.

The past decade has seen drastic changes in the international landscape. Emerging challenges such as COVID-19 and regional conflicts have underlined the need to instill a greater sense of community in the human family. Lasting peace, universal security, common prosperity, openness and inclusiveness, and a clean and beautiful environment should not be grandiose rhetoric, but what every country should bear in mind when advancing their national objectives.
